13 years of excellent service

This clinic is a very solid well run facility. We have used them for many dogs and cats and have been very pleased with all of their services. The pricing is excellent and the service is friendly.

They seem ok, but...

Not the cleanest or most friendly place in the valley. I had a problem with a dog having a reaction to routine shots once and called. It was a Saturday afternoon. In my message I reminded them this was a Chihuahua so I was very concerned as this breed can have a much more adverse reaction than other breeds. After 30 minutes I gave up and called another clinic in town who immediately answered the phone and helped resolve the problem. Eventually these folks did return the call but I felt like the entire situation was handled with little regard for the welfare of the dog. B

interesting

This cat story is the first negative thing I have heard about BSFVC yet. I have never heard anyone complain about their prices or their care, except for cat lady. Sorry about your cat, but I bet money that the other vet clinics nearby use the same drug mix, and almost any drug can kill you if you have a negative reaction.

I am a vet tech...

Ketamine is reversed with Yohimbine. That is specifically why they used it. Dexdomitor is an analgesic (pain killer) in addition to a sedative which is why they used it. Dexdomitor can also be reversed--use Antisedan. Dexdomitor is commonly used with Ketamine for anesthetic purposes. If this person's cat had problems it was probably just an anesthesia reaction which some cats are susceptible to, or the cat had some unknown heart condition. Of course they will use this combo for other procedures because if a cat is going to rip your head off and you need to take a radiograph, do a dental, or any other thing, using a sedative (and sometimes an anesthetic is required) which you can easily reverse is necessary for the safety of both the cat and the tech/vet. Although it may not be the ideal combo, all vets are different and you should not base your entire opinion of this clinic on on .01% chance incident. Also, cat lady was ranting--so it was a heated, not rational opinion.

reprehensible vet care

WARNING- Do not take your animal to this vet clinic! I wish I’d read a review like this before I took my cat to this vet clinic. Spring of this year (2011) I took him in for a routine procedure (dental cleaning) and they administered a sedative before anesthesia which stopped his heart. At seven years old with no preexisting conditions, my cat died in their care. Since then, I’ve consulted with a half a dozen vets about what happened. All of them discourage using what is known as a “kitty cocktail” dexdomitor and ketamine. Ketamine is NON-REVERSIBLE! If I had only known that Blacksmith Fork Clinic’s normal protocol includes giving medication that sometimes stops an animal’s heart, and that they use this medication even in standard procedures (not only for life threatening surgeries, etc) and also unnecessarily (as I now know there are several other safer drug combinations to use on cats).
