City Hall is governed by the City of Independence, which is one of the largest urban areas in Polk County in Oregon. Founded in 1845, the city has a population of more than 7,900 residents. Its public works department works to oversee stormwater management, wastewater collection, water treatment and distribution, and street, park and building maintenance functions. The City of Independence also manages a police department that is responsible for offering rescue services for the communities of Independence and Monmouth in Oregon. In addition, the city has a library that maintains a collection of over 20,000 books and multimedia materials.
