The nurses were very caring and responded to my family when needed. They explained what to expect when the end was near and my husbands breathing would change. He was kept comfortable at home with all of us. Thank you.

I used to think hospice provided peace, comfort and care to terminally ill people and their families and focused on keeping a dying patient as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Unfortunately my experience has proven otherwise. My mother did not get the care and attention she needed! My family did not get the emotional support and comfort they needed.

My mom’s first night under the care of Silverado Hospice was a nightmare. She suffered so much throughout the night that I had to leave her room not to hear the disturbing sounds she was making. It was the most horrible night of my life watching her suffer like that and not be able to do anything.

After my experience with this hospice I would think twice if I ever have to consider a hospice care in future god forbid. If you HAVE to use hospice make sure you are knowledgeable about the standards of care and services your loved one is entitled to so that you will know better what to say and how to get the care that is needed. Most importantly find out how well they are staffed and managed.

NEVER use Silverado Hospice fo...

NEVER use Silverado Hospice for your loved one. If I could give Silverado Hospice zero stars, I would. They sent a nurse who was highly incompetent and inexperienced to take care of my loved one. As a result, my relative suffered severe pain, gagged all night, made loud choking sounds and tried desperately to breathe as her entire chest would cave in with each breath.

She suffered a traumatic experience for an entire night all because the nurse did not know to massage the medicine down my loved one's throat, instead of just injecting it into her mouth and walking away!! On top of that, Silverado Hospice was very slow in returning calls and when my family and I complained to management, we were given attitude and nothing was done to rectify the situation.

This was a horrific way for someone to die and I pray that no one ever has to see their loved one suffer like this, all at the hands of a hospice that we thought we could trust and rely on during the last days of our loved one's life.

I was against hospice taking c...

I was against hospice taking care of my mom right from the start. However, when I took her in for her last checkup, her doctor recommended Silverado Hospice. Finally after hearing all the wonderful things they were going to do for her I was convinced that it was the right way to go to make her last days as comfortable and as pain free as possible.

Silverado Hospice promised dying process with dignity and comfort. Instead my mom experienced a great deal of pain and suffering as a result of one inexperienced nurse. I watched my mom suffer an entire night during her shift. The dying process was a nightmare! The images of my mom's chest rising and caving in, her desperate struggles to breathe with a mouth so wide open that must have hurt her jaws, gagging and choking on morphine and her facial expressions from uncontrolled pain are permanently burned into my memory. Thanks to the empty promises of Silverado I felt no comfort whatsoever. I am sure my mom didn't either! How could she! I watched her suffer all night long.

I know nothing will undo that night and no apologies would ever take away the suffering she endured. But I do know that a dying person need not suffer more because of an inexperienced, improperly trained, incompetent and indecisive nurse. That is just inexcusable!

I am real disappointed at Silverado and would not recommend them to anyone. I feel hurt, angry and heart broken because they made promises they could not deliver. However, I have to admit there were two wonderful nurses who went beyond their job duties to care for my mom. I would forever be grateful to them.

For those of you looking for hospice services please do your homework and know what you are getting into. Save yourself and your loved one from much unnecessary suffering. Ask about the qualifications of the nurses, their hands-on experience with dying process and the extent and availability of the support provided. Most importantly learn all you can about dying process to determine what is normal!

We had the worst experience wi...

We had the worst experience with Silverado Hospice Care in Orange County, California. If we knew then what we know now, we would have immediately declined their services and sought hospice care elsewhere. We selected Silverado for hospice care for a beloved family member after being promised that their hospice care would provide "comfort" and "dignity in the dying process" with "expert nurses" in order to enable family members to "cherish their last moments with their loved one." Rather than experience these promises, we experienced extreme headache and heartache.

Silverado provided one nurse that we felt was very unsatisfactory. We found her to be both inattentive and insensitive. The entire family was forced to listen to horrific sounds of our loved one gasping for air, coughing, moans, groans, and witness disturbing displays of facial grimacing and jerking body movements for eight hours of her shift. Although there were prescriptions for increasing the amount of medication depending on pain and discomfort, she did not increase medication until the last hours of her shift after many family members had to request for her to do so. She did not once call the physician for guidance even after family requests. Her demeanor made it evident that she treated this as a job and nothing more. The entire eight hour experience was traumatizing for the whole family. It was not until her shift ended and the next nurse was scheduled that we watched our family member's condition improve with increased pain medication administration and the calling of the physician for further guidance. Furthermore, the subsequent nurse noted discomfort immediately after the prior nurse had written that the patient was comfortable (to the complete shock of the entire family)!

The worst part of the situation was the stress and trauma induced from the experience on family members still to this day. We never were able to enjoy our loved one during these last days because we were constantly forced to check in with the hospice and follow through with their services. Silverado failed to schedule nurses for shifts. We had to provide care ourselves while calling to inquire why a nurse had not been scheduled. It took painstaking phone calls and follow ups to have a nurse scheduled. During the last day that our family member was alive, no one was scheduled for the afternoon and evening shifts. As soon as a nurse was finally sent after we had called, our family member died half an hour later. There were periods when we called for assistance and we had trouble contacting someone from their 24-hour call assistance.

We received attitude from the staff when we complained about these problems. We think Management handled our complaints inadequately.
