Growing up, Ly Chu was always interested in science and the human body, so it wasn’t a surprise when she headed off to Baylor University as a pre-med student. After graduation, she put medical school on hold. “I wanted to see what life as a care provider was really like.” Working as a medical scribe in the emergency room at Harris Fort Worth offered Chu an up-close view of the dynamics of modern-day medicine. Over time, she transitioned from emergency medicine to urology. “There is such variety in urology,” she notes. “It’s really interesting. Urologists are essentially human plumbers.” Scribing for many of the physicians who would eventually become founders of Urology Partners of North Texas, Chu saw the caring way they interacted with patients and put them at ease. When her father was diagnosed with cancer, the importance of compassionate care hit close to home. “Seeing the way the oncologist treated my dad and made him feel comfortable inspired me to continue my education. I wanted to be able to do that for patients one day.” Chu completed the 26-month physician assistant program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Today, she is proud to be an integral part of UPNT’s patient-first approach—working alongside Dr. Keith Bloom and Dr. Keith Waguespack in the Irving clinic. “Dr. Bloom and Dr. Waguespack treat their patients like family,” she says. “They let every patient know we are here to take care of them as best we can. That’s what I’m passionate about—treating our patients as family. I want them to feel comfortable discussing anything with me, and know that I’m there for them when they need me.” As a physician assistant, Chu knows she plays an important role in patient-centric care. “By supporting our physicians while they care for patients with complex conditions, I care for individuals with less complicated issues so our patients don’t have to spend a lot of time in the waiting room,” she adds.
