The Red Cross Volunteer Life Guard Station is the home of a volunteer lifeguard service that offers protection to visitors to Jacksonville Beach in Jacksonville, Fla. The service was founded in 1912 and is known as the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps. The group has a tradition of public service and innovation in lifesaving skills that span more than 90 years of volunteer service. The corps recruits men and women twice a year who are in good physical condition and of high moral character to participate in its recruit training program. There are nearly 120 active lifeguards protecting the beach and running the station. Another 300 or so retired members, as well as alumni, also contribute to the effort through active participation or through financial support.
