They hire people with little or no training to take care of physically and mentally handicapped persons. They are shown by the current staff how to do their job which includes how to lift a 250 lb. man out of his wheelchair into his bed by using a Hoyer lift. The nursing staff is mainly LPN's and the ancillary staff runs from Kinkaid to several other facilities owned by Florida Mentor. You are told there will be a nurse and at least 2 or 3 techs to each building. This is not true, since the wages are so low any LPN or tech who can get a better paying job will leave at the first opportunity. They usually have 2 nurses for 3 buildings and maybe 2 techs for each building. When one tech leaves the building to take a dinner break or meet her boyfriend in the parking lot this leaves her alone with up to 16 patients waiting to have a diaper changed or to be turned. Drop by around 3 AM, you will find some staff asleep or watching TV. The patients receive socialization during daytime.
