Very simple.

A&B $165 - on Christmas eve. Kovan showed me as he tested the wires and coil pack independent of each other - found only the coil faulty and wires in perfect condition. He replaced the coil pack and I was able to enjoy my Xmas.

Mavis (Main St) $1223 - said they will do a full tune-up. Disregarded my request to replace the single coil and respective 2 wires.

Precision (Endicott) $504 - to replace the single coil pack and 2 wires.

As opposed to just a rating - a depiction of events will best explain the overwhelming difference in service, knowledge and price between A & B Auto, Mavis and Precision Auto.

I travel to Binghamton often from DC to visit family. I was just there for Xmas. My check engine light came on as I pulled into Binghamton last Thursday night (12/22). First thing next morning (12/23) I went to AutoZone (Main St) for their free diagnostic test. Results, I had a misfire in one cylinder (no smoking issues - just some under-compression). This meant either a bad coil pack ($69 @ Autozone), plug wires (set of 12 $179) or both plus 30 minutes labor.

I first went to Mavis because of proximity. I told them I wanted to replace 1 coil pack and two wires if needed. With complete disregard for my request to replace the single coil pack and two wires - the manager Joe, proceeded to tell me they will do a total tune-up - changing all coil packs, all wires and all spark plugs for $1223. I reminded him of my initial request - in searching for an answer his reply was that he would not guaranty the work if I did not let him replace all coil packs and all wires. I took back my car.

Received a referral from my brother-in-law - Precision Auto Service in Endicott. I called them and explained the situation to Doug. He agreed to do the work I asked - for $504.

Went to Autozone to buy parts to do work myself. In speaking with Kevin at Autozone - he referred me to Kovan at A&B. He agreed to see me on Xmas eve. See above.

My son is a student at Binghamton University and I lent him my car for a few weekends. I live 4 hours away in Brooklyn NY so I wasn't able to assist him when the drivers side window got stuck and wouldn't go up. I told him to try Sears or an auto glass place. There were none that could help in Binghamton so he used google and found A&B. They picked up the window and diagnosed it as a broken window motor in the door and said they'd call when the part came in. When they called and he was going to get it fixed, the car kept stalling out and wouldn't hold a charge. Being 200 miles from home he was sort of screwed and I told him to have it towed to A&B to check it out. They diagnosed it as the alternator and fixed both at a very reasonable price. I don't know a lot about cars but to me it sounded like the alternator and the motor for the window, but I was in no position to say for sure. My mechanic of over 30 years who is extremely competent and honest arrived at the same diagnosis based on the description. Many other places would have ripped my son off and/or misdiagnosed it. KOVAN, who my son dealt with, and A&B, did not. They did an excellent job at a very reasonable price and were honest and treated my son respectfully as if he were a long standing customer. All I want from a mechanic is that they know what they're doing, that they charge a fair price, and that they're honest. A&B is all that. Thank you Kovan and thank you A&B.
