My issues with Child Care Unlimited’s Johnstown summer SACC program:

1. Alice is very disrespectful. I paid ahead. Alice had more than $150.00 of my money that was not yet due to her program, yet she had one of her workers give me a bill for "out of pocket" money Alice paid for a pool visit. Alice was so very disrespectful when I spoke to her regarding the “bill”.

2. The pool is REQUIRED, but not included in the cost of care. It is less expensive to buy a pool pass, otherwise parents must pay for individual visits (refer to the trouble I encountered in #1).

3. The kids are at the pool ALL DAY LONG - from 9:45 to 6:00. There is not adequate shade. They are essentially in the sun all day. My kid frequently had many bug bites and was sun burned. Apparently Alice has not heard of the diseases ticks and mosquito's carry. She uses that pool as a daycare so she does not have the overhead of a building. Parents pay her overhead in the form of a pool pass.

4. The handbook says kids will be escorted to the pool bathroom by a staff member. Instead, staff members sit under the only shade provided (small pool umbrella), and send the kids to the bathroom “in pairs”. My 7 year old routinely went to the bathroom at the pool alone, while staff remained seated at the pool.

5. Alice provided a list of field trips at the beginning of the year. I enrolled and paid the registration fee in large part based upon the field trips. Alice cancelled field trips, with no notice and no reason provided. She sent them to the pool instead (yes, MORE pool time). If I knew the field trips would be randomly cancelled, I would have enrolled elsewhere.

6. Alice does not bother with capital expenditures. The toys are dirty and broken in the church the kids are in during the time they are not walking all over Johnstown or at the pool. If you allow your child to bring an electronic game, realize Alice does not allow children to play with the device for more than 20 minutes. Alice is apparently more concerned with the effects of video games than she is about skin cancer or West Nile virus.

7. The building the kids are in is unsafe. There were times the kids had to leave the day care area to go to the sanctuary of the church due to safety issues.

8. The cost of the program increases annually. Per Alice, this year’s reason was “transportation costs”. The kids were being transported to a pool in Sunbury last summer (just gotta have that pool); this year the Johnstown pool was open, and the kids walked there. How does that increase transportation costs?

8. When I expressed concern about my child walking in the rain at the Columbus zoo on a 65 degree day with no jacket, Alice left me an incredibly unprofessional, hatefully sarcastic voicemail. I saved that voicemail if anyone wants to hear Alice at her best. I am told by others she does not treat children that way, but anyone who acts like that is not going to be allowed around my child.
