While attending the University of Iowa, I looked for a career in the medical field that was challenging and yet set in a controlled comfortable environment. My studies lead me to the Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. I was thrilled that there was a study of medicine that was mostly beloved by its patients and not feared like many others in the medical field. Being a foot and ankle specialist has allowed me to work in a comfortable office setting and surgical centers rather than working on floors of a hospital. I am hoping that this brief introduction into my patient care philosophy and educational background will provide you with enough information for you to make an important decision about your foot and ankle physician. The doctor is often more to be feared than the disease. ~French Proverb This Proverb hold true in today's system of medicine and says a lot about the perceived doctor patient relationship. In my clinical experience, patient comfort and education during an appointment are the most important aspects of any doctor visit. My goal as a physician is to make the appointment as relaxing and calming as possible, and to also educate the patient about the condition and possible treatments. I encourage all questions about the condition and treatments. I will explore all options of treatment for every condition and I will only consider surgery when all conservative treatment has been exhausted. Educational and training background is also important for the patient to consider making an informed decision about their physician. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Chemistry before heading to medical school in Des Moines, Iowa. My education finally ended here in the Chicago area where I completed a rigorous multi-year surgical residency at Norwegian American Hospital. At Norwegian American Hospital, I completed over 800 foot and ankle procedures in 24 months.

Very Educated

I went to Dr. Tiernan after visiting 2 other orthopedic Dr's in Joliet whom did nothing for me. Dr. Tiernan found the problem discussed with me thoroughly what needed to be done. I was in pain almost 24/7 and limped to ease some of that pain. While after surgery and following his complete orders even though it was tough sitting around doing nothing but it paid off. The scotter he lets you use it the greatest invention ever got around much easier then using crutches. But after the rest and the physical therapy I now walk normally and am in no pain what so ever. Thanks again Dr. Tiernan your the best. :)

Dr. Tiernan is a FANTASTIC foot doc!

I came to Dr. Tiernan after another foot doc could not help me at all. Dr. Tiernan did everything in his power to make me more comfortable, and to alleviate the tremendous pain I was in. It was finally determined that I had a stress fracture in my heel. Why Dr. Tiernan even lent me a scooter so I could get around work without putting weight on my foot. He is easy to talk to, discusses options, and lets you know exactly what is going on. I would highly recommend him to anyone that needs help with their feet!(Thanks Doc!!!)Dianne
