Dr. Stein had been my gastroenterologist for years, until I changed to an insurance carrier his office did not take. Just prior to this change, on 12/27/2016, I send my son Max, then 18, for a quick consultation as he had some acid reflux. Dr. Stein wasn't available so he was directed to another doctor, Dr. Altschuler. The visit was short, he prescribed omeprazole 40mg, and suggested an endoscopy. There was no discussion. Yes, the visit was billed as level4, $195. "A level 4 office visit is when the dr goes into detail in regards to the patients history, any labs or reports obtained from past as well as other dr notes, current symptom(s) and/or issues the patient is having, and past, current or future medication history. There is a level 2, 3, and 5 as well," per the office manager email of 5/13/2019. Max had paid his co-pay, I was the policy holder, and I had no idea about this bill until I found out that Max's FICO score, previously 666 in February 2019, had dropped to 641 in March. There was only one reason: the Maxson & Stein office had sent the bill for collection. This is when I found out about level 4, etc. They refused to adjust the bill to the level corresponding at the service, and apparently could not reach Dr. Altschuler for comment since he was no longer with the office. So, next time you go there, make sure you know what they charge your insurance company for.
