Island Foot and Ankle Specialists welcomed Dr. Douglas Birch to the island in November of 2003. Dr. Birch was attracted to the multicultural nature of Maui, having traveled the world extensively. He was born in Saudi Arabia and lived in the United States, Argentina, Brazil and the Philippines. He loved the diverse cultures and people wherever he lived. He felt that Maui offered such a wonderful blend of many cultures all in a small geographical location. Dr. Birch lives in Maui with his wife, Kristen, and their five children. He has come to love the people here and has been actively involved in the community. He has been or is currently involved with organizations such as American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). His undergraduate education was primarily at Arizona State University. He graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, California, with a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) degree. He also completed two residency programs at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, New York and at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Dr. Birch works from his private practice in Kahului and is on the surgical staff at Kula Hospital, Maui Memorial Hospital and Aloha Surgical Center. He specializes in nearly all foot related problems, including wound care, limb salvage, sports medicine, foot trauma and diabetes related complications.
