W. M. Keck Observatory features two of the world s largest optical, near-infrared telescopes, at the more than 4,000-meter summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. At the center of each 10-meter Keck telescope is a primary mirror composed of more than 30 hexagonal segments that work together as a single piece of reflective glass. Both Keck telescopes are equipped with adaptive optics, which compensates for the blurring due to atmospheric turbulence. Additionally, the Keck I and Keck II telescopes can work together as the Keck Interferometer. W. M. Keck Observatory is headquartered in Kamuela, Hawaii. It is managed by the California Association for Research in Astronomy, a nonprofit organization whose board of directors includes representatives from Caltech and the University of California.
