The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is a history park that provides an interactive experience about the pioneers who passed through this region of Nebraska on their way West. It offers visitors, including teachers and groups of school children, an entertaining learning tool. The historic legacy of The Great Platte River Road provides lessons in the development of the United States. Visitors witness the enactment of stories of the Oregon, Mormon and California trail pioneers, the pony express, stagecoach, and the building of the railroads. They also witness the creation of the first transcontinental road, the Lincoln Highway and today s modern transportation system. Visitors can continue the historical experience further by dining at the Chuckwagon Restaurant, that offers a wide variety of fresh and homemade meals. The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is located in Kearney, Neb.

Awesome interactive museum

The Archway is a fantastic place to take the kids over and over again. What a cool way to get them "into" history. We were greeted by costumed re-enactors, and the minute we walked in saw the wagon train. The grandkids and I enjoyed seeing the ruts and looking into the wagons. The sound system is out of this world. I suggest taking the headphones off after listening to the narration in each area and hear the sounds of the wagons, buffalo stampede, rain, thunderstorm, trains, black smithing, and even the spirit woman. We saw stage coaches, pony express riders, wagons, model T, Lincoln highway campground, outdoor movie theater, 1950's diner and the kids got to use radar to see how fast the traffic was moving on the interstate below. There were folks coming through on coach tours, some folks in wheelchairs, babies in strollers. All ages enjoy the Archway. What a great way to teach kids the fortitude and tenacity it took the pioneers on the trails in order to succeed. There is dry camping for RVs, plenty of parking for semi-trucks, hike and bike trails, a bridge to feed fish from, a maze that looks like an old wooden fort and they say Pawnee lodges are going to be built soon along with a sod house. We will be going back for the Dancers of the Plains event in June we can all enjoy the Pawnee powwow and take in the other things going on that day as well.
