I was born in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. My formal education began with elementary school and continued through university. In 1983, I received a bachelorâ??s degree in science from the Polytechnic Institute and secured an engineering position with a local research facility. In 1989, however, life in the former Soviet Union became unbearable, and my family and I immigrated to the United States. Upon my arrival in America, I didnâ??t speak any English; hence, my American career started with learning a foreign language.
