Keys Energy Services
1001 James St, Key West, FL 33040
Established in 1943, Keys Energy Services is a nonprofit public power utility owned and operated by the residents of Key West, Fla. The company imports the majority of its power supply from mainland Florida. A utility board, elected by the people of Key West, decides how to operate Keys Energy Services. Though most power is imported, the Utility Board adopted an on-island, backup generation policy to ensure reliability. If the transmission line is not operable, the company s crew starts up local generators and supplies up to 60 percent of the area's peak power requirements. Keys Energy Services is a member of the Florida Municipal Power Agency's All-Requirements project. As a member of FMPA, Keys Energy Services pools its generating facilities and power supply requirements with 14 other municipal utilities in Florida.
