Provided by YP.comMy father, who's 85, took a 4 groove 30-06 barrel into Maier's shop and asked that he put it on an older 30-06 M1903 type military action that had a worn 2 groove barrel on it. The 4 groove had a smooth clean bore that wasn't pitted and was very clean without nicks or rust and very little wear since it had been in a cabinet for a couple decades without use. He went in a clearly told Maier himself that he wanted the 4 groove barrel cut down a small amount and re-crowned, then installed on the action in place of the 2 groove.
Some days later a staff person called and wanted to know what was to be done to the rifle which was worrisome since instructions were given and written down. A few days later the shop called and said it was done.
My Dad went into the shop and was presented with an action that had a dinged up unpolished 2 groove barrel on it that wasn't the original or the 4 groove barrel that has been delivered with the action. My dad told Maier that there must be some mistake that it wasn't the barrel he brought in plus where was the original barrel from the rifle. Maier told him that it was to the barrel that Dad brought in. When my dad pointed out that the mounted barrel was a 2 groove barrel Maier got angry and told him to get out. He never produced the originally mounted barrel and told my dad he needed to leave.
Maier's behavior was really abrupt and a sudden change from being so cordial initially. I suspect he knew something had been swapped or lost and figured the old man wouldn't know the difference. What wasn't counted on was that Dad has done a lot of his own gunsmithing over the last 65 years and knows his business. He hires because he doesn't have a shop with turning equipment and all the necessary tools for barrel changes etc.
I think Maier knew he was busted and couldn't face the truth so it was easier to kick dad out (he felt to guilty to charge him by the way) and tell him never to come back hoping that he won't have to face him again.
