In the summer of 1963, with $50 and a dream, Dan Hall started Greater Tennessee Flooring. Dan had worked for clients all over east Tennessee installing floor covering in their homes and businesses. Our original location was located in an alley behind the old Zayres Department store on Baxter Avenue. The condition of the building was lacking to say the least but with $50 you are limited to what you have to pick from. Dan liked the Baxter Avenue location because at the time it was in the center of Knoxville. Even today, after over 50 years, you can get to our location in about fifteen minutes coming from north, south, east or west Knoxville. Dan’s wife Beulah held a full time job with the old Alber’s Drug Company and worked in the evenings and on Saturday to help Dan build their dream. By 1969 business was booming and Beulah decided to leave Alber’s and work with Dan in the growing flooring business. This was a tough decision because now their entire future rested on the success of Greater Tennessee Flooring. In 1974 we had more than outgrown our current location and the search was on for a new place we could call home. As luck would have it Dan stumbled onto a large area of land that had just come up for sale just down the street from our current location on Baxter Avenue. The land purchase was made and less than one year later we had a brand new 8,000 square foot building to call home. By now in addition to Dan and Beulah there were five other employees and growing more every year. We added on to the building on two other occasions in 1979 and 1984 until today we have expanded to 24,000 square feet in what is considered by many to be one of the most complete and beautiful showrooms in the country. Due to illness, Dan retired from the business in 1985 and his son Steve continued to run the family business. Beulah retired in 1999. We are still growing today as Steve’s two daughters are becoming more and more involved in continuing on a little family business that has grown to become one of the top area rug stores in the country and it was all done with a little common sense and a lot of hard work. For over 50 years we have worked hard to provide our customers with the largest selection, the finest quality, at the best price possible and that is our simple plan to assure that we are around for another fifty years. It gives us a sense of pride to know that we have customers come to our store, in search of area rugs, from a 150-mile radius because they realize the customer service, selection, quality and low prices are more than worth the drive.
