David Granet, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and adult re-alignment (strabismus). He is the adult ocular motility specialist for Shiley Eye Institute, and his clinical interests include state-of-the-art adjustable suture strabismus surgery, childhood eye misalignments and disorders, nystagmus, and the role of vision in learning disorders. Dr. Granet is the Anne Ratner Chair of Pediatric Ophthalmology and director of the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children's Eye Center located within the Shiley Eye Institute. He is one of the founders of the Shiley Thyroid Eye Disease Clinic and director of the Divisions of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Eye Alignment Disorders for UC San Diego Health. He is also a professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Granet's research interests include developing new techniques to facilitate adult adjustable suture eye muscle surgery, new ways to identify childhood eye disorders, and re-evaluating the use of electro-physiologic testing in apparently blind infants. Dr. Granet also runs the USA-certified pediatric ophthalmology fellowship training program, which is an international program. A world-wide educator, he has been an invited professor in countries such as Singapore, China, Australia, India, and England, among others. He also co-founded the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology which has held the largest meetings in the field, with participants from over 100 countries. He has published over 150 articles, chapters and books. In particular, Dr. Granet has published many articles on new and different approaches to eye muscle surgery. He is also the senior author of the textbook, Challenging Cases in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Dr. Granet completed a residency at New York University School of Medicine, where he served as a chief resident. He completed a special two-year fellowship at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Granet earned his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, where he served as president of his class. He is board-certified in ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO), the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). Dr. Granet's work has led him to be consistently named as one of the Best Doctors in America and as a top doctor in San Diego Magazines Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society. He also earned the Senior Achievement Award from the Academy of Ophthalmology and the Senior Honor Award from the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology. A dynamic speaker, Dr. Granet was selected to host UCSD-TV's Health Matters. He is also the founder and moderator of the International Pediatric-Ophthalmology Internet discussion group.
