In 1996, Dr. Goldbaum published a report on the first known case of a newborn with E-Coli Endophthalmitis, resulting in inflammation of the internal structures of the tissues in the eyeball. Dr. Goldbaum's breakthrough in treatment for macular hole was featured in 1998 issues of Ocular Surgery News and the journal, Ophthalmology. The technique using silicone oil has the potential of greatly altering the treatment of macular holes worldwide. In 2005, Dr. Goldbaum introduced a new method for detecting visual field patterns in glaucoma that was used independent component analysis, a form of unsupervised learning. This method was used to develop a new method of detecting progression of glaucoma from glaucoma tests that may change the approach for detecting worsening glaucoma.UC San Diego Health LinksFor more information, see http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/eyes/Pages/default.aspx.
