Sheila Crowe, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist with a special interest in caring for those with celiac disease, food allergies, and many forms of food intolerances, including non-celiac gluten sensitivity.Dr. Crowe has been listed annually in Americas Best Doctors in America, and has received several awards from the American Gastroenterological Association, including 2008 Outstanding Woman in Science, 2008 Funderburg Award (for gastric cancer research), and 2013 Distinguished Educator Award. Dr. Crowe has been named one of the top 75 gastroenterologists in the U.S. by Beckers ASC, and one of Virginia and Washington D.C.s Top Doctors" in Virginia Living Magazine.Dr. Crowe is the author of many articles and book chapters and was a contributing author for the book Celiac Disease for Dummies, published in 2010. From 2009 to 2010, she served as a consultant on topics related to celiac disease for the online health section of The New York Times.As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Crowe is dedicated to conducting research, providing clinical care, and teaching and mentoring medical students. Her clinical interests include H. pylori infection, acid-peptic diseases, infectious GI diseases, celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, food allergies and colorectal cancer screening methods. Her research focuses on understanding the immune-epithelial interactions involved in gastrointestinal diseases. She has received ongoing funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for her work studying the role of oxidative stress in gastric epithelial injury related to H. pylori infections.Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Crowe was the director of the Celiac Disease Center and director of endoscopy at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She also served as director of the GI fellowship program at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and started her academic career as an assistant professor at McMaster University in Canada.Dr. Crowe holds numerous distinguished positions across many national organizations. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, and American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), for which she recently served as councillor-at-large on the AGA governing board. Dr. Crowe also serves on the medical advisory boards for the San Diego Celiac Support Association, the national Celiac Disease Foundation and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. In recognition of her expertise in the field Dr. Crowe serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology Board which formulates the gastroenterology board examination necessary for specialists in the field to become board certified. Dr. Crowe recently served as chair the AGA Publication Committee and as the editor of AGA Perspectives. She has been a member of the editorial boards of American Journal of Physiology - Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Mucosal Immunology, and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.Dr. Crowe completed her residency, internship and fellowship in gastroenterology at McMaster University.
