Not terribly impressed yesterday. My surgery got bumped back from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. and not a single staff member let me know what was going on. I kept waiting...and waiting...and waiting. I wasn't exactly looking forward to the procedure and every time a staff person walked by I hoped that someone would FINALLY be coming to take care of me. Ah, I was disappointed time and again. :-( I did not need to be NPO (nothing by mouth) because I was having local anesthesia- I could have had some juice or cookies since I was there from 11:30 until 3:30 but not one single staff member thought about that. Instead, I came home not only numb and tired from the anesthesia but also very hungry from a full 2.5 hours in pre-op on the wonderful gurney. I understand when surgeons get backed up but it is the responsibility of the staff to communicate this with each other and with the patient. My nurse stated she had no idea that the surgeon was running so late. SMH. The OR staff also needs to have a (better or even any) plan for patients who are short of breath laying flat when having hand surgery. I noted my orthopnea clearly on the pre-op information sheet but it was news to the OR staff who didn't know what to do for me.
