After practicing law for 38 years, I know how to write and speak persuasively. When the IRS sent me a tax deficiency notice, however, my skills failed me. I prepared a detailed explanation of the error in the IRS’ computations and factual assumptions and prepared a book of supporting exhibits. The IRS replied, rejected my explanation with virtually no discussion, and added a 30 day deadline for me to pay the claimed deficiency.
