I used to teach first grade at Attwood and I can tell you after having taught for 30 years, that Attwood is one of the best schools I have ever taught in--and I have taught in many. Pat Fitzpatrick is the principal and is wonderful! She is there for the students, is a Christian, is dedicated to getting what the students need to learn and the teachers need to teach. I loved my experience at Attwood (eight years.) I now teach special education, so I had to change buildings, but I think very fondly of Attwood and my experience there. The teachers are SO dedicated and no matter what programs and materials you have, there is nothing more important than the experience, care, dedication and love of the teacher that your child is with on a daily basis. My own children attended a different school district due to where we lived at the time, and I can honestly say that though that districts "scores" were higher, Attwood and many other schools in Lansing that I have been privilaged to teach in, had far superior programs and teachers. I credit this to the fact that in some suburban districts, the children already come to school prepared to learn and with many advantages. Lansing teachers are a special breed! They are there because they love children and are willing to go that extra mile to teach even difficult to teach children and children that may not come from the best circumstances. That means that if you are a dedicated and involved parent already, if your child is already a "ready" learner, you especially benefit from having the best that there is in a teacher, and a district.
