The Michigan Department of Transportation is responsible for planning, designing and operating streets, highways, bridges, transit systems, airports, railroads and ports to provide safe, rapid, comfortable, economical, convenient and environmentally safe movement of people and goods. The department also works for the construction, improvement and maintenance of the state highway system. It is responsible for the administration of several state transportation programs. The Michigan Department of Transportation also works for the development and implementation of transportation plans. The department s highway development division Prepares construction and reconstruction plans for bridges and related structures. It is governed by the State of Michigan.
