Peek behind the racks of dresses, furs and hats and over the counters of flashy jewelry and you find something more than bling. Every Sunday afternoon a corner of DuBarry Fashions becomes a lounge, where a handful of shoppers turned fans are treated to music that fits most sizes. They get to try on blues, jazz, R&B, Motown, pop and romantic ballads while sipping champagne, eating hors d'oeuvres and checking out the threads. ¿These two mesh very well,- says Derek David, the purveyor of hot music and haute couture. For the past 37 years David has been with the Platters, a doo-wop group founded in 1953 and known for such hits as "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and "The Magic Touch." He is now the lead singer. The Platters are part of a nightly show at the Sahara that also includes Cornell Gunter's Coasters and the Marvelettes. David, a man of impeccable taste "sartorially and musically" uses the Sunday afternoon gigs to step out of his Platters persona. He sings the songs of Billy Eckstine and other legends. He's backed by a five-piece combo that fits the room like a glove. The group features Dave Hart on guitar, Dave Garland on keyboards, Alex Leon Jr. on congas, Billy Carmody on drums and Tim Fahey on bass. Some musicians have a hard time finding a gig in Las Vegas these days, even in the corner of a clothing store. But not David.
