Founded in 1889, Kansas Geological Survey is a research center that provides a range of geological studies and surveying solutions related to natural resources, water quality and geologic hazards. It publishes various journals on topics, such as computer science, engineering geology, geochemistry, geohydrology, geophysics, paleontology, mineral economics and stratigraphy. The center additionally produces a variety of computer programs and data bases derived from geologic investigations. It maintains a library that provides curriculum-related materials and a variety of leisure reading options for researchers, as well as stocks more than 13,000 rotary-cutting samples from Kansas wells. The center employs over 40 student assistants and nearly 90 researchers and support-staff members. Kansas Geological Survey is a part of the University of Kansas, which offers public research and teaching institutions that operates through multicampus systems.
