Worth the drive from Athens or Atlanta.

We stumbled on the Local Republic after making a stop in Lawrenceville to do a little antique shopping. This now has become my favorite place in Georgia to eat at that isn't a barbecue joint. I would call their style local food with an artisnal twist. A little bit trendy, a little bit hippie, and darn good.

They have an amazing and ever changing beer selection. Our server had just come back on a brewery tour of Colorado and was extremely knowledgeable about their Colorado based beers (Lefthand, Oskar Blues, and New Belgium) as well as the other beers they had on tap or in the bottle. I was pleasantly surprised that they even had gluten free beer from New Boulder.

Don't let the trendy gastro pub tag scare you away from bringing the kids. There were a lot of families there - tattooed moms and dads and adorable babies sleeping in car seat. While there's no kids' menu, they can prepare usual kid fare like burgers, chicken fingers, and grilled cheese.

The portion sizes are HUGE. I had a chicken liver appetizer with caramelized onions that could have served as a main course. (I love chicken liver, but if everyone made it the way the Republic does, EVERYONE would love liver, too.)

My husband had a bowl of chicken and andouille gumbo that was very tasty and we shared that evening's special - grilled cod. Fantastic but soooo much food! My daughter had a burger, which was big enough to have for lunch the next day. And my son had a Cuban pulled pork panini style sandwich. The big hit with all of us was the bacon mac n cheese. Oh my goodness.

Get there early as the place fills up. You can eat outside, too. Can't wait to go back!
