As a geriatric psychiatrist, I work with my patients and their loved ones to consider all aspects of their illness. This includes the psychiatric, medical, neurologic, psychosocial, spiritual, and existential factors unique to each person. This approach allows us to create a tailored treatment plan that addresses all aspects of a patient’s mental and physical health. I became interested in geriatric psychiatry when I saw how fragmented the care for my aunt with early onset dementia was. I also saw how little support her family had throughout her illness. I believe involving a patient’s family is an integral part of providing quality care. I set aside time to discuss the care plan with patients and their families to ensure that everyone understands the diagnosis, prognosis, coordination of care, and treatment plan. Outside of my clinical work, I teach geriatric psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, and medical students. These learners are often active in my clinic and assist in caring for patients. Together, our goal is to reduce the suffering of patients and their families and to improve their quality of life.
