Established in 1883, the Lynchburg Fire Department provides fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical and rescue services. The department is comprised of more than 190 personnel, including civilians, firefighters and emergency medical personnel and operates over five fire stations. It also employs a health and safety officer who is responsible for respiratory protection, turn-out gear inspections and investigation of the cases of fire accidents and injuries. The Lynchburg Fire Department also conducts fire safety seat inspections and offers advanced planning and management services for chemical releases. It supports a partners in emergency response program that provides specialized emergency services. The department is accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.
