John Knox Village seemed to be a wonderful place while our mother was in independent living, with activities, food, laundry and gift shop services in the building, and campus transportation provided.

However, once the transition had to be made to the Care Center, John Knox rapidly deteriorated in our estimation. The more care she required, the more neglect she experienced. As she progressed through the system, we found that her nails were not kept trimmed so she scratched herself to the point of bleeding; she was left sitting in a wheelchair and briefs for hours, leading to skin breakdown and ulcerations; and she, as well as the other residents were all routinely fed very heavy meals twice a day that resulted in bowel compaction that led to chronic vomiting. Once her meal orders were changed to a light, soft food diet, that problem was solved. This should be common knowledge and practice for all wheelchair-bound residents.

It took a hospital visit and care from a wound specialist to get her skin healed up and get her bowels unblocked. It was at this point that we added Kansas City Hospice to her team of caregivers, giving Mom the care we expected her to receive from John Knox considering the vast sums of money they had taken from her.

Over the course of the 3 years she was in the Care Center, she was moved from the 100 unit to 300 (the memory unit which is locked down), then the last move back to 100. The contrast between the two is marked, with 300 being much noisier and the odor of urine pervasive, while 100 was much quieter and did not have the scent of neglectful care.

The Care Center is understaffed, mismanaged and neglectful of their residents. Unfortunately our mom passed away a month after this final move but due to the wonderful care Kansas City Hospice gave, her passing was peaceful and our family does not have to live with regrets that we didn’t provide her with the best care possible in spite of being in the John Knox Care Center.
