Since taking up the clarinet in fourth grade, Brad Cressley knew that in some strange way music would guide him throughout his life. His devotion and love of music is apparent every time you open the door Carbon County Music and More. A former business administrator for an optical chain, Brad lost his job in 2003 due to downsizing. As a performing musician in the community since college, Brad knew that the area was in desperate need of a closer music shop. So, he pulled together his resources and pursued his dream. A few months later Carbon County Music and More opened at 124 S. First Street in Lehighton. In 2005, Carbon County Music and More moved to its current location of 199 S. First Street in Lehighton. We carry everything from musical instruments and accessories, to new and used lesson books and print music, says Brad. We even have gift items. They also offer lessons for all levels. Woodwinds, such as clarinet, flute, oboe and saxophone are their specialty, but there are also lessons for beginning trumpet, trombone and percussion. We're looking to add a guitar teacher in the near future, states Brad. I really enjoy the lessons and working with kids, but I enjoy the business management side as well. The private lessons have really helped Carbon County Music and More over the years. In this recent economic downturn the music shop has seen a pick-up in lessons. People were not spending as much on vacations this year, says Brad. So, perhaps there was money available for their children to continue their lessons instead. And, not only do the students gain more confidence during the lessons but studies conducted by the Education Resource Information Center have shown that kids who are involved with music also do better academically.
