The Johnson County Housing Authority administers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program for the cities of De Soto, Edgerton, Gardner, Lenexa, Merriam, Mission, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, Shawnee, Springhill and Westwood in Kansas. It is a federally funded program that is designed to provide subsidies to low and extremely low-income families. The program also offers an incentive to private property owners to rent to low-income families by offering subsidy payments, yearly inspections and mediation. Its Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program assists families in improving their economic situation and reduces their dependence on public assistance. The Johnson County Housing Authority is a part of the Johnson County Human Services and Aging Department, which provides a variety of human services to senior citizens, people with disabilities and low-income families.
