We first contacted RTF Mechanical to repair our heating unit. RTF sent a technician and a trainee, they thought the unit had stopped running due to clogged filters and a worn starter. After some time they had replaced the parts and attempted to start the heater. It took three attempts for the heater to run. The technicians were paid $550.69 and as the pulled out of the driveway the heater stopped working again. I called the company and explained what happened and they stated I had to pay another service call fee and they would be out to assess the problem. I had to negotiate with them that I would not pay a service fee a 2nd time for a problem they didn't fix the first time. Eventually they agreed and sent technician out again. This time, while he was servicing the heater, the owner pulled up to my house, he let out a curse and went to greet the owner. The owner looked over the heater and diagnosed that I would need new valves and a bladder. He would have to order the parts and he would let me know the cost. He said that HE would install the parts. After they left, the company called my husband and gave him a price for parts and an hourly rate, they stated it would probably take 4 hrs. to complete. The owner came to complete the repair and was able to do so in an hour and a half. I paid him $600.23 for his services at the quoted price and did not realize we had paid for time he did not use as I was unaware of the hourly rate. He however should have been. I called and complained but they stated they use a generator to calculate the cost of any repair and would not refund us the money. As the months cooled down we realized the heat on our second floor was not working as it was prior to the repair. We assumed air had been let into our lines and they were not circulating as the circulating valve was open. We were wrong, our pipes ended up freezing and bursting. A service man informed us that although the circulator was on, the valve that let the water run through pipes was not. So there was no movement of hot water. RTF closed this valve during their repair. Due to they’re incompetence, we had to replace 20ft of copper pipe and countless feet of insulation costing us money we should not have lost.
