Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government consists of the mayor and the Urban County Council. The mayor serves as chief executive of the government and is involved in the supervision and administration of all departments of the county s government. The Urban County Council is the legislative branch of the government and has the power to establish budgets for the operation of the Urban County Government and set governmental policy. The Council also has the power to levy taxes, subject to the limitations of the charter and laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Lexington has a vibrant downtown shopping and dining district. In 2004, the city ranked second in best places to move a family by Best Cities for Relocating Families magazine and ranked fourth in Safest Cities of America.
