Reading and writing is a huge umbrella. There are many potential moving pieces. There is reading for comprehension, organization of thought, and the ability to express it verbally or on paper. There is the ability to draw conclusions, identify the main idea, and draw inferences. The development of this type of critical thinking supports creativity in the written word as well as verbally. For basic beginning reading skills, the method is phonetical development as it relates to everyday words. There is less focus on memorization of phonics, but rather an internalization of them through reading passages and using real life dialog. Younger students or older students who read with difficulty or are unable to read, are given the same credence as those who are able to fully understand the written word. They are starting at a more basic building block, but on the same path. Study and organizational skills are another area of tutoring I offer. Our minds are capable of organizing information more effectively than simple “cramming” for memorization. Techniques used are logical order, visualizations, chunking, and word association. This is particularly useful when memorizing large amounts of information. Organizational skills support all of this. An organized mind is a more productive mind. This doesn’t mean just organizing our thoughts onto paper. Our work space and physical work areas have a huge impact in overall productivity
