Established in 1956, Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, and its Gathering O' Scottish Clans division, is a nonprofit, non-stock corporation licensed under the laws of North Carolina. The organization s mission is to constantly strive to be a premier Scottish Highland games and gathering place for clans, guests, families, sponsors, patrons and visitors. Other goals of GMHG include carrying on and promoting the annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans; fostering and restoring interest in traditional dancing, piping, drumming, athletic achievement, music and Gaelic culture; and establishing scholarship funds to assist students from Avery County High School. Typical activities sponsored by the organization include the Aggie Woodruff Golf Tournament, Celtic Jam, Scottish fiddling, harp competitions, heavy athletics, Highland dance, picnics, piping and drumming, sheep herding, track and field and Highland wrestling. Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is located in Linville, N.C.
