About Dohrn Transfer HistoryDohrn Transfer, founded in 1981, is a family-owned regional less-than-truckload and truckload carrier headquartered in Rock Island, Illinois. Dohrn employs 850 non union workers and serves a 10 state territory in the Midwest out of 23 terminal locations.Dohrn's history dates back to 1921, when Charles Dohrn bought a single open-top Federal truck and offered his services to deliver freight in and around the Quad Cities for anyone who had freight to ship. Every day he would drive from stop to stop, often on dirt roads, loading and unloading whatever his customers wanted to ship. This was how Dohrn Transfer Company got started ; one man, working six-day weeks, tailoring his business based on his customers' needs.From this modest beginning until 1980, Dohrn Transfer Company delivered the goods. With terminal locations in over 30 cities in a 14 state area, and operating more than 2, 000 units, Dohrn's reputation grew to mean dependable and swift service throughout much of the United States.In 1980, the original Dohrn Transfer Company was sold to Tiger International. There was only one young family member ready to continue his career in trucking. He was a vice president who now had no company. Gary Charles Dohrn, 33 at the time, was left with the decision of what now to do with his life.Gary made his decision, and in 1981 started Dohrn Storage and Distribution, as a local warehouse and distribution company. After a couple of years operating under this identity, Tiger International filed for bankruptcy, and Gary was then allowed to change the name back to Dohrn Transfer, the same company name operating from the same family line as the original.The new Dohrn Transfer grew from practically nothing in 1981 to a company that saw over 85 million dollars in revenue in 2009. Gary has always focused on the principles that Charles started the company with: hard work and a business tailored around the needs of his customers.From just three people in 1981 to over 850 in 2010, Dohrn Transfer Company is now coming on strong. With a sizable direct operating territory, a strong information infrastructure, and a team of dedicated employees, Dohrn is positioned to offer the best of both worlds: the flexibility and courtesy of a family owned company combined with the operational ability and logistical expertise of a large corporation.Dohrn continues to be a family-run company, with the fourth generation working and contributing in their respective areas: Joe in management and information technology and Heather in sales and marketing.
