Since my last review in 2010 things around here have gotten worse and better depending upon one's viewpoint.
This building has been acquired by a large corporation headquartered in Tennessee or Kentucky. They own and manage several similar residential retirement buildings mainly in the eastern part of the U.S.
The better part; They replaced the air conditioning system. Did a complete makeover of the entire building - inside and out. New hallway floors, common area's furniture, new pool table, new "skin" on the outside walls of the building and landscaping.
The worst part; removed several tall pine trees that lined the parking lot and alongside of the building which provided shade for many parked cars on hot days. Removed the vending machines in the lunch room. The new "paintings" on the walls of the the hallways, lunch room, lobby, etc look like those paint-by-number paintings I did as a kid. Cheap as if bought at K-Mart. Replaced the apartment windows that used to open with ones that do not. As an expensive result, we cannot regular the temp in our apartments (cool downs) by opening a window in the summertime. Have to run the A/C continuously. Which makes it so hot in here in the winter. Now in the middle of October with the A/C off - the outside temp is 57° - inside my apartment is 82°. Cannot run the A/C but use the floor fan to move the hot air around. The latest is that they have replace the washer and dryers in all the laundry rooms on each of the 9 floors. And get this --- no more quarter slots to do laundry and dry. We have to scan a DEBIT card to operate both. Now, how many seniors here have DEBIT cards? Most probably do not have credit cards! I do not have a DEBIT card. But I would guess most have checking accounts from which the DEBIT cards will draw from. Thinking about moving gain.

My mother lives here she LOVES...

My mother lives here she LOVES it. She loves her apartment her friends the manager Rebecca and Tony.( I am not sure of his title.) Trying to make the elderly comfortable and happy cannot be an easy task. Her apartment is cozy as she calls it. I cannot speak about repairs or complaints by others but my mothers have always been taken care of immediately and most of all with kindness. The staff here is always so pleasant and helpful I cannot understand any complaint.

Brashear Towers

The previous review is absolutely true! A person can walk down any hall and smell the smoke coming out of the apartments and this is on the no smoking floors. The building manager has no respect for the citizens that live there and treats them like second class citizens. No socializing in the common areas of a senior housing complex is archaic. Repairs are not done in the proper manner and the occupants must wait several days or weeks to have their complaints addressed. Duck tape does not fix a window that needs repair, garbage disposal problems are fixed by an amateur, ceilings that are crumbling are not repaired, the list goes on and on. The wonderful seniors that live in this building are being abused and the woman in charge has an egocentric approach to the problems at Brashear Towers.

Brashear Towers needs new management so that seniors can spend their last years enjoying life. More activities should be allowed and seniors should be encouraged to visit with one another on a regular basis without fear of being reprimanded.

As the new (as of March 2010) Building Manager at Brashear Tower, I felt compelled to respond to the negative reviews posted here. Since I wasn't present during the time these reviews were written, I cannot objectively attest to the accuracy/inaccuracy of any of the statements that have been made. What I can attest to is that I, (along with my assistant Rebecca, also new to Brashear Tower as of late February 2010)am committed to doing the best we can to provide clean, safe, and comfortable living accomodations to all our residents. We also understand that each resident deserves to be treated with respect, and that their families need to have the peace of mind that Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa are happy and enjoying life in a welcoming environment that helps foster their continued independence. I'd also like to directly address a few items spoken of in the negative reviews: 1)We encourage our residents to organize social gatherings, and everyone is free to congregate and visit with each other in the common areas as they see fit. 2) We do our utmost to respond to maintenance items in a timely, professional manner, and utilize outside contractors if the scope of a problem goes beyond the expertise of our maintenance crew. 3) Brashear Tower is a 100% smoke-free building, and anyone discovered attempting to circumvent this rule is dealt with accordingly to ensure the comfort and well-being of all residents. To anyone who is searching for Independent Elderly Housing and is skeptical about Brashear Tower after reading the two reviews, I would like to make a request: Please come visit us, and form your own opinion. We would be happy to show you an example apartment, the common areas, and some of the things that Brashear Tower has to offer. Whether or not you or your loved one ends up deciding to live here, I'm confident that you will leave Brashear Tower with a positive impression. Sincerely, Tony B.
