Founded in 1978, the Downtown Women's Center is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 2,000 homeless and low-income women each year. The center provides over 40,000 meals and approximately 45 permanent supportive housing apartments, as well as a range of health and education services. Its Day Center is a drop-in facility that serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks for homeless women. The center serves women suffering with mental illnesses, substance abuse and physical disabilities. The Downtown Women's Center s private apartments feature refrigerators, desks, full-size beds and closets. Located in Los Angeles, the center specializes in a variety of case management, health outreach initiative and literacy programs.
