I stumbled upon Fast Tax Services about a decade ago, following my father's passing, and after the painful realization that you should never take tax advice or tax prep referrals from an ex of any kind. The short version of the story is this: my tax situation got rather complicated after my dad died - something to do with children being taxed more than spouses, complicated by the fact that dad lived out of state. My ex BF recommended his tax guy - mind you, money issues were at the center of our demise, but I digress - anyway, I actually took his advice (remember, I was grieving at the time) and ultimately his guy made a HUGE mistake on my return. I only happened upon Fast Tax as the original preparer was still under the impression I was due a refund and suggested that I find another preparer with e-filing capabilities so that I could get what was coming to me faster. I picked up my phone book - this was pre-yellowpages.com days - and found an ad for Fast Tax. The neighborhood was familiar to me as I attend a church just a few blocks away - so I called, explained my situation and went in that same day, returns in hand, eager to get my hands on my refund. Alas, after sifting through the mess the first guy made, I learned that the HUGE mistake was NOT in my favor, and that I actually owed the IRS and not the other way 'round. Still, the folks at Fast Tax were kind enough to help me figure out what to do next - namely contact the IRS ASAP and explain the situation to them - and if I'm not mistaken, I wasn't assessed a penalty. As well, I don't believe I was charged a penny by Fast Tax for the service they provided. Needless to say, I've taken my taxes to them every year since, and I highly recommend them to everyone!
