About YMF Mission Statement Young Musicians Foundation ( YMF ) is devoted to preserving the classical music heritage by providing performance opportunities, financial assistance and community outreach programming that contributes to the personal, academic and artistic development of youth from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. YMF is committed to the belief that music unifies a community and is a universal language vital to keeping classical music alive and to the development of audiences that include young listeners. Through it's two branches Artist Development & Assistance and Education & Community Outreach, Young Musicians Foundation ( YMF ) is able to provide support and recognition to young artists of all ages and abilities in Los Angeles, Southern California, America, and around the world. The heart & soul of the foundation and its Artist Development & Assistance Branch is the renowned Debut Orchestra, which is one of only three pre-professional training orchestras in the country. Now in it's 55th season, the orchestra, under the direction of Music Director/Conductor-In-Training Case Scaglione ( Cleveland Institute of Music, Peabody Conservatory ), invites sixty-five gifted musicians age 15-25 residing in Southern California, to perform a variety of traditional and modern repertoire, while also assisting in the development of the skills and qualifications necessary of the next generation of professional musicians. Alumni of the Debut Orchestra currently serve in leadership positions in orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Musicians also have the opportunity to work with top film composers such as Michael Kamen, David Newman, and John Ottman through the BMI Composer-In-Residence partnership. Additionally, select individuals can receive training through YMF's Arts Management Training Program. Many of the musicians comprising the Debut Orchestra began their education in other YMF programs, including the Chamber Music Series ( now in its 38th season ), the Scholarship Program which provides over $50, 000 in assistance each year, and the YMF/Balmat National Orchestra Camp. Under the tutelage of Lucas Richman ( Music Director, Knoxville Symphony ) the camp is one of the foundation's most successful and beloved programs bringing together some of the most talented 10-15 year old musicians from around the county, providing a healthy balance of intense orchestral experience & recreational activities. Education & Community Outreach The Education and Community Outreach Branch allows YMF to reach out to those students who otherwise would not have access to the resources and funds needed to study music. Centered around the Mentor Artists Program, the foundation provides over twenty-five elementary and middle schools In Los Angeles County with weekly tutoring, after-school orchestral classes and general music appreciation assemblies with senior members of the Debut Orchestra and other emerging professional musicians. This allows YMF to not only provide a valuable resource to the community, but training vital to the development of career of our top collegiate musicians. The foundation partners with organizations such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and local school districts to reach out to more students across the county. Top students and alumni of the program move on to participate in the YMF Youth Orchestra, a tuition-free ensemble that performs advanced-level youth orchestra repertoire, presenting three free concerts to the public each year. Each of these participants is also a recipient of assistance through the Scholarship Fund for Diversity ( originally underwritten by composer John Ottman ), which provides scholarships for select, underserved, minority students graduating from the Mentor Artists Program.
