The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is a law enforcement agency that promotes public safety, identifies and solves criminal cases and safeguards citizens rights. It employs more than 155 sworn personnel, over 120 correctional staff, nearly 120 civilian personnel and approximately 400 community volunteers. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department supports the Crime Stoppers program, which is affiliated with the National Crime Stoppers Organization and provides opportunities for citizens to report illegal activities to volunteers of the program. The department operates a jail that provides detention facilities for convicted criminals and detainees in pending trial status. Established in 1850, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is located in Los Osos, Calif.
