Provided by YPmobileOn July 8, 2014, at approximately 11:20am Central Time, I stopped at a Phillips 66 gas station in south Lubbock. The gas station was named "Bernard's" and it was located at 19307 Highway 87.
Approaching the gas station door there was a sign taped to the front entrance that stated "...no public restrooms..." I entered and asked the clerk working if we could use the restroom. She appeared puzzled and confused, stumbling over her words she stated the store didn't have one we could use. Thinking she may be under the impression that we were not purchasing any items but only wanting to use the restroom, I clarified to her that we were purchasing items but my 7 year old son and 73 year old mother needed to use the restroom.
Again she was confused and stumbling over her words. I asked "is the restroom for employees only?" She replied, "pretty much." Believing the lady was lying about the policy I told my family that we were not purchasing anything and began moving toward the door. Recounting the story to my wife in disbelief I said aloud, "pretty much?" The clerk while walking out of the store and with her back to us said again, "pretty much."
We left. I conducted a computer search for the store and address and was directed to the Phillips 66 website. I called and was put in contact with Cheryl Marquardt. I related my concerns to Cheryl and she stated she would forward it on to SEI Fuels Services the fuel distributor for this station. I asked Cheryl what the process would be? She stated the fuel distributor would be in contact with me. I also asked for the name and contact information of a district manager and she stated she couldn't give it to me. Cheryl was professional and I appreciated her help.
I called Bernard's after hanging up with Cheryl and asked for the manager to which the lady replied, "I am the manager." I asked if she was the lady I had spoken with about 20 minutes before while in the store, and she said "yes, and your the ones in the silver van." I asked her name and she said "Ann." I ended the call by saying "thank you, your name is what I needed."
I called back hoping to get contact information for the district manager. "Ann" stated there was no district manager and the store was privately owned. I asked for name and contact information for the owner and she replied "I'm not allowed to give that information to you, bye"; she hung up the phone in my face and I did not call back.
I would like to file an official complaint. I believe I have been discriminated against on the basis of race. In talking with Cheryl she stated to me that the gas station "should be offering restrooms to paying customers." There was nothing that suggested to me restrooms were out of order, including no sign and no mention of it by "Ann."
My family was neatly dressed and presented no reason to have been treated this way. I am asking for help from the Phillips 66 corporation to ensure this never happens to ANYONE again, regardless of race!
Can you please contact me to further discuss this matter as well as a course if action to resolve this concern.
Thanks and God bless
