The Department of Public Works-Streets Division encompasses the maintenance and administration of more than 850 lane miles of roadway, over 315 lane miles of road shoulders and nearly 175 miles of sidewalks. The public works department is the one of the largest operating departments in Lynchburg, Va., with approximately 300 budgeted personnel positions. The streets division also supports police and fire departments in emergency events and promotes various special events for the city. It provides services for the maintenance of streets through various types of patching and surface repairs, road shoulder and drainage maintenance. The division supports several street sweeping and snow and ice removal programs.
