Established in 1965, the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council is a nonprofit agency that works to eradicate poverty, as well as helps low-income individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency. It offers a range of commodity, housing and volunteer services. The Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council administers the Head Start program, which includes educational and social development activities for more than 750 children and their parents. It supports the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which features one-time financial assistance for eligible households to help meet their energy costs. The agency also conducts the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides surplus agriculture produce as dietary supplements to low-income households. In addition, it offers a variety of housing services. The Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council is a member of the National Head Start Association, Community Action Partnership, Georgia Community Action Association, Georgia Head Start Association (GHSA) and Southeastern Association of Community Action Agencies (SEACAA).
