Overcoming Church Of God
1708 3rd St, Macon, GA 31201
The Overcoming Church of God Faith Temple, Inc. was founded and organized in 1938 by the late Bishop M. C. Griffin. Bishop Griffin, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, began laying the foundation for the Overcoming Church in 1935 by preaching tent revivals throughout the city of Macon, Georgia. The Bishop erected a large tent at the corner of Ell Street and Broadway with a few faithful followers and believers in Christ Jesus. Bishop Griffin continued preaching and lifting up the name of Jesus and church membership increased greatly. After much prayer and application, God led Bishop Griffin to purchase the church building located at 2010 Fifth Street in Macon. The church was dedicated and named St. James Overcoming Church of God. For nineteen years, Bishop Griffin pastored and continued to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. On December 31, 1957, God called him home to rest. Following Bishop Griffin demise, St. James continued in its struggle to grow and promote the Gospel. Before receiving a full-time pastor, St. James endured many shepherds. In 1970, Bishop John L. Cotton was appointed pastor of the St. James Overcoming Church of God. Although still an elder at the time of his appointment, the Lord later exalted him to not only become Bishop of the church, but also of Bishop of the Overcoming organization which consists of eleven churches located throughout the continental United States. Following his appointment, Bishop Cotton, a man with explicit faith, sought God for a larger sanctuary and moved, in faith, to obtain a building. God honored the Bishop's faith and, in February 1971, the Lord blessed the church to move from 2020 Fifth Street to 1708 Third Street, Macon, Georgia. During this move, the name of the church was changed to The Greater Overcoming Church of God Faith Temple, Inc. In 1970, the Lord gave Bishop Cotton a vision for church growth. The vision was implemented and membership increased from a small band of believers to over 600 with approximately 300 active members. Several auxiliaries were formed to assist the pastor in fulfilling the vision God had given to him for the continued growth of the church. Under his leadership, The Greater Overcoming Church has made steady, tremendous progress. In addition to its many victories in the area of soul-winning, the Church also operated the Little Miss Muffet Day Care Center which served over 55 students daily, instituted the Prayer Changes Things radio ministry which was heard weekly over radio station WIBB, instituted the Hour of Faith television ministry which is still broadcast weekly over station WGNM. The Greater Overcoming Church of God was the first church in Macon to establish a bus ministry through the purchase of two twelve-passenger vans and one sixty-passenger, and one Silver Eagle Trailways Coach. In addition, membership increased steadily from 600 to over one-thousand members with over sixteen active ministries within the church. To God be the Glory!
