Established in 1893, Madera County Sheriff's Department provides public protection, investigation of crimes that occur and the arrest of perpetrators in the unincorporated areas. The department is divided into two geographic sections, the valley and the mountains. Its agricultural crime unit enforces laws and provides investigative services related to theft and property damage to the agricultural communities and rural industries. It has a year-round off-highway enforcement team specializing in law enforcement, search and rescue, medical assistance and public education. It allows local residents to complete a citizen academy and to patrol their communities as citizen volunteers. Madera County Sheriff's Department has a tactical medical response team, and is located in Madera, Calif.
