My life has taken me on a journey of self-discovery, and along the way I decided to return to school at midlife to receive my doctorate in psychology at Marquette University. It was a wild ride, I learned a lot, and gained much experience in how to be helpful to others seeking psychological well-being. I greatly enjoy the practice of psychotherapy, and feel honored to accompany individuals and couples along their healing journeys. My view is that experiences in our lives affect us in many ways - positive and negative - but all experiences shape us. Some experiences cause distress and pain, and we may become depressed or anxious, make choices that are not in our best interest, or may turn to alcohol or drugs as a way to cope. Seeking help to overcome that distress, to find healthy ways of coping, is an act of courage. In my experience, psychotherapy offers an individual a place removed from day-to-day life where one can safely explore the distress, to talk about the experiences or situations in order to process unresolved feelings and repair damage done. Psychotherapy can become a place of self-discovery and personal growth when one engages in the process with openness and non-judgment and maintains a sense of curiosity about the self, what makes one tick. I've often found that as old wounds are healed and awareness of who one is comes forth, there is a deeper experiencing of life, and a soul-directed path is unveiled.
