The Madison Police Department is a law enforcement agency that preserves peace and detects and prevents crime. Located in Madison, Wis., it undertakes various criminal cases and works with other state, local and federal agencies for ensuring the safety of exchange of information and law enforcement officers and the public. The Madison Police Department employs a staff of more than 490 full-time, sworn officers, volunteers and civilians. The department has the Emergency Response Team (ERT), which deals with high-risk and dangerous situations, including barricaded persons, high-risk warrant arrests, explosive devices and heavily-armed criminals. The Madison Police Department supports the Crime Stoppers program, which is affiliated with the National Crime Stoppers Organization and provides opportunities for citizens to report illegal activities to volunteers of Crime Stoppers.
