The Badger Herald debuted in the fall of 1969 as an alternative voice on The University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. It was born to cover and combat the turmoil of the Vietnam protests. The Badger Herald is one of the largest, fully independent daily campus newspapers in the United States. It does not receive funding or any other assistance from the university in publishing nearly 16,000 issues, five days a week and maintaining its own Website. The Herald supported by advertising and powered by an all-student staff. The paper reflects the tastes and perspectives that are unique to students on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The Herald mission is to present objective news, sports and arts coverage in addition to editorial stances that reflect the interests and tastes of UW-Madison s student community. Headquartered in Madison, Wis., The Badger Herald employs nearly 75 people.
